EP 119 - Building a Sustainable Wedding Photography Business with Susan Stripling

Hi friends! In this episode I’m sitting down with Susan Stripling to talk about what it actually takes to build a sustainable wedding photography business. Susan has been in this industry for over two decades, and her perspective on longevity, business, and staying relevant is grounded and honest. We talk about treating photography like a real business from the beginning, balancing creativity with structure, and why sustainability matters more than quick growth.

Meet Susan:

Susan Stripling has been photographing weddings, portraits, and theater for almost twenty-five years. Susan's work has been published in Inside Weddings, Martha Stewart Weddings, Grace Ormonde Wedding Style, Modern Bride, Town and Country Weddings, the New York Times, New York Post, Rangerfinder, and PDN. She's won multiple awards at the prestigious Wedding and Portrait Photographers International 16x20 print competition and holds the prestigious Grand Master Status at WPPI as well.

She has been named one of the top ten wedding photographers in the world by American Photo Magazine. She is a Canon Explorer of Light and the founder of The Wedding School.

In her spare time, Susan is a voracious reader, obsessive new scuba diver, sourdough enthusiast, lover of all horror movies, and inexplicably sleeps with the lights on.

Longevity Isn’t an Accident

Susan was really clear about this: longevity comes from treating your work like a business early on. Not once you “make it,” not once you’re busy, but from the start. She talked about being scrappy in the early days, making smart decisions, and understanding that sustainability matters just as much as creativity.

That mindset is a big reason she’s still here, still booking, and still enjoying what she does.

Creativity and Business Can Coexist

We also talked about something I know a lot of creatives struggle with: the fear that focusing on business will kill your creativity. Susan pushed back on that hard. Her take is that knowing your numbers, systems, and structure actually gives you more freedom to create, not less.

You don’t have to choose between being an artist and being good at business. You can be high-level at both.

Relationships Matter

Early in her career, Susan booked a lot of work through Google, which I loved hearing. It’s a good reminder that there’s no single “right” way to grow. Over time, though, her most valuable leads shifted to planners and referrals, especially in a market like New York.

Her point was simple but important: planners are often the gatekeepers, and real relationships matter. Showing up consistently and building trust over time is what opens doors.

Staying Curious and Strategic

Even with everything she’s accomplished, Susan isn’t coasting. She’s still intentional about where she invests her time, energy, and money. We talked about industry events, education, and being honest about return on investment. Not every opportunity is worth saying yes to, and you don’t need to do everything to keep growing.

That level of self-awareness feels like a huge part of why she’s been able to stay in this industry for so long without burning out.

Money Matters (More Than We Want to Admit)

Susan didn’t sugarcoat this part: creatives need to think about money sooner. She strongly encouraged photographers to work with a financial advisor and have a long-term plan. Not just for taxes this year, but for retirement, stability, and longevity.

It’s not the most exciting topic, but it’s a necessary one if you want this career to last.

Why This Conversation Matters

This episode isn’t about hacks or quick wins. It’s about what it actually looks like to build a career that lasts decades, not just a few good years. Susan’s perspective is honest, grounded, and incredibly reassuring, especially if you’re trying to figure out how to stay in this industry long-term.

If you’re building a photography business and thinking about sustainability, growth, and what comes next, this conversation is worth a listen.
