EP 120 - Building Community as a Photographer with Alex Nena
In this episode, I sat down with Alex Nena, and we’re unpacking what community actually looks like in the photography industry. We talk about building real connections, navigating comparison, and why having people around you matters both personally and professionally. It’s an honest conversation about growth, support, and not trying to do everything on your own.
Meet Alex:
Alex Nena is a vintage- inspired wedding and elopement photographer based in California. Her work blends old world and modern elegance together capturing weddings that feel both intimate and cinematic. She is known for mostly for her low light capabilities and vintage look. Beyond her client work she is passionate about giving back to the photo community believing that knowledge is meant to be shared and creative growth thrives in community.
Alex’s Path Into Photography (and Community)
Alex didn’t start out thinking she’d be a photographer. She was studying physical therapy, took an art class to check a box, and very quickly realized drawing wasn’t her thing. Photography, though? That clicked.
One of the biggest turning points in her early career came after a friend’s wedding, when she met another photographer who was generous with her time, advice, and encouragement. That single interaction shifted Alex’s confidence and perspective - and it’s a perfect example of how powerful community can be when it’s rooted in generosity instead of gatekeeping.
Why Community is so Important
Alex talks about how isolating this industry can feel - and how important it is to not try to do everything on your own. Especially in a space that can feel competitive or overwhelming, having people who get it makes all the difference.
She shares why she loves Summer School, and how smaller, more intentional communities create space for real connection, learning, and support. Growth doesn’t happen in a vacuum - it happens when you’re surrounded by people who are learning alongside you.
Or as Alex puts it: growth happens with people, not by yourself.
Comparison, Vulnerability, and Being Honest About the Hard Stuff
We also get into comparison because it’s just so easy to do. Alex is honest about how easy it is to compare yourself to other photographers, but she also reminds us that different styles, paths, and approaches are exactly what make this industry interesting. There is room for all of us.
I share my own experience with comparison, especially being surrounded by other photographers, and how important it’s been for me to talk openly about those feelings instead of letting them quietly spiral. Vulnerability isn’t weakness - it’s what creates deeper connection and relief.
How to Actually Build Community (Without It Being Weird)
If you’re wondering how to build community, we talk about that too - and it’s way simpler than people think.
DM the photographer you admire. Reply to stories. Join conversations. Show up to things. Be human.
Alex talks about how reaching out - even to people you look up to - can turn into real friendships. And I remind listeners that most of us are dealing with the same insecurities, questions, and growing pains.
The Bigger Picture
Community might be a trendy word right now, but this conversation isn’t about trends. It’s about connection, longevity, and building a life and business that actually feels good to be in.
This episode is a reminder that success doesn’t come from doing everything alone - it comes from building relationships, lifting each other up, and growing together.
If you’ve been craving that kind of support, that’s exactly why Summer School exists.
