EP 115 - What AI Means for Photographers (and Why It Matters) with Chris from Grainy Boi Weddings (Copy)
This time, I’m sitting down with Daniel Knight Harris, a photographer and art director whose background in music, fashion, and film has deeply shaped how he approaches wedding photography. We talk about his transition from music and fashion into weddings, what it looks like to treat each wedding like a creative brief, and why film still plays such an important role in his work.
Meet Daniel:
Daniel, is a photographer and art director with a background in music, fashion, and film. For over a decade, he created visual work for brands like Netflix, Pinterest, Leica, Dr Martens, Spotify, and collaborated with some of the world’s most celebrated music artists . In 2021, he traversed fully over from Fashion & Music into weddings bringing his creative director hat with him. Over the years, he's found himself supporting his booked couples over their planning periods, helping them with their creative decisions across fashion, design, curation and production. He brings an artful, personal, and relaxed approach to each celebration he takes on and he feels that in the photographs. His clients typically look for a mixture of film photography and digital photography in their coverage that allow him to create images that feel timeless, expressive, and reflect his couples and their celebrations. His work has been featured in Vogue with two more features coming this month, he has taught a masterclass on Lensel this past September on Film Photography and he was recently named one of the UK’s Top 50 Wedding Photographers by Professional Photo Magazine. He works predominantly in Europe and the U.K.
From Music to Weddings
Daniel’s transition into wedding photography wasn’t something he initially expected to love - especially when he found himself photographing celebrity weddings early on. But over time, weddings became a space where his love for storytelling, creative direction, and collaboration could really live.
As Daniel put it, “There’s something about weddings that’s so circumvents; it allows for more scope to actually play and create magic.” Instead of approaching weddings as a formula, he treats each one as a completely new brief - something bespoke that reflects the couple’s personalities, style, and story.
A Creative Director’s Lens
What stood out most in our conversation is how Daniel sees his role. He doesn’t just show up on the wedding day - he’s involved year-round. He talks with couples about everything from clothing choices to tablescapes, helping guide the entire visual language of the day.
“I effectively have year-round conversations with couples that have booked me,” he shared.
That integration of fashion, art direction, and photography is what defines his work. It’s not about standard poses or predictable moments - it’s about collaboration and building something intentional together.
Why Film Still Matters to Him
Film plays a huge role in Daniel’s process. On a typical assignment, he’s carrying five to six cameras, working across digital and multiple film formats. For him, film isn’t nostalgia - it’s a way to stay present and engaged.
“I like a little bit of adversity in how I have to use something so it feels like I’m actively photographing something.”
That limitation, that extra effort, is part of what keeps the work meaningful for him - and it shows in the way his images feel.
On Pace, Boundaries, and Saying No
We also talked about the less glamorous side of creative work - burnout, pressure, and pacing. Daniel emphasized the importance of being intentional with bookings and trusting that the right work comes when you make space for it.
His advice was simple but powerful: take your time, align with projects that actually resonate, and don’t be afraid to say no. Not as a loss - but as a way of protecting your creativity and making room for the work that matters most.
Final Thoughts
Talking with Daniel was a reminder that photography doesn’t have to be rushed or templated to be successful. His approach - slower, more considered, deeply collaborative - feels like a quiet pushback against the speed and automation of the industry.
