EP 117 - Ins and Outs of 2026 for Photographers
Hi everyone! In this episode, I share my thoughts on where I think 2026 is headed for photographers and creatives. I talk about the growing importance of community, the shift toward more human-first work as AI becomes more common, the pull back toward hands-on, process-driven creativity, and why diversifying income can create more freedom. This is less about predictions and more about patterns I’m noticing and how I’m thinking about moving forward into the new year.
Community
One of the consistent themes I anticipate for 2026 is the surge in community-focused activities. "I think community is gonna be in, which is really freaking sick," I shared about the global network I've been building. In a world where connection feels more scattered, there's something undeniably powerful about bringing people together, whether virtually or in-person. After all, it's not just about creating a network; it’s about cultivating genuine relationships.
An Anti-AI Wave?
There's a chance we might see an anti-AI trend among creators. As AI tools advance, some photographers are looking to market themselves as embracing raw, human creativity. "I think we're gonna see photographers almost advertise in a way that is against AI," I mentioned, pondering the potential backlash against automated processes.
The Return to Tactile
As technology races forward, there's a counter-movement embracing all things tactile and hands-on. Whether it’s through the vibrant tones of 35mm film or the intricate craft of darkroom printing, the industry might collectively yearn for the imperfect beauty of manual creation. “Things like emulsion lifts, cyanotype, and collaging - whatever it is that is tactile, hands-on, and creative," could take center stage once more.
Trends in Weddings
Reflecting on the evolving nature of weddings, I foresee a shift towards more casual, intentional ceremonies. Economic considerations and a desire for meaningful, personal touchpoints might drive a move away from hyper-luxury events. "I think out [of favor] is probably like a hyper-luxury push," I predicted, hoping for a more relaxed and personal approach to special days.
Diversifying Income Streams
In a world where financial stability is increasingly paramount, diversifying income streams may no longer be a mere option, but a necessity. Encouraging my listeners, I shared how such diversification can lead to greater artistic freedom: "I can say yes to things purely because I want to do them."
Humorous Connections
Amid these changes, humor stands out as a uniquely human trait that might gain even more appreciation. Despite not considering myself a comedian, I foresee humor playing a crucial role in content creation: "Humor is gonna be in, I think funny people are gonna be frigging on top."
Embracing Change Without Permission
In 2026, let's all cultivate a spirit of action without waiting for permission. Whatever dreams or projects you've hesitated to start, make this your year to forge ahead. "You do not need permission to do anything," I urged, advocating for proactive pursuit of goals without the need for external validation.
These predictions aside, there’s always room for change, evolution, and surprise. Whether you’re an emerging artist or a seasoned professional, the new year holds boundless potential for innovation and growth. So, here's to a future filled with unexpected adventures in creativity.
Before signing off, don’t forget about our upcoming event in Nashville on January 9th. It's open to everyone, and it's going to be a fantastic opportunity to connect with like-minded creatives. As always, if you enjoyed this blog, feel free to leave a rating, review, or share with a friend.
