EP 102 - Mastering Flash Photography with Laura Shepherd

Hi everyone! In this episode, I’m chatting with Laura Shepherd about her journey into photography and the role that off camera flash has played in transforming her work. We cover learning flash through trial and error, favorite gear, stepping outside your niche to stay inspired, and finding balance between business, family, and creativity.

Meet Laura:

Laura is a Portland based wedding and elopement photographer. She is the photographer who everyone describes as 'chill' but is always ready to laugh, cry, and party with you! With a love for everything romantic, editorial, and emotional, becoming a wedding photographer came easy to her. Laura is ready to translate your love into a visual editorial that you and your partner can cherish forever... while always having a good time!

Why Off-Camera Flash Changes Everything

One of my favorite parts of our conversation is hearing how off-camera flash completely transformed Laura’s work. Shooting weddings, she went from relying on auto to really learning her gear - and she swears this is what made her images stand out.

Her words: “If you want your photos to stand out, you need to explore off-camera flash. It opens a world of creative possibilities.”

Flash Tips from Laura

Experiment: Don’t be afraid to try different setups - studio, wedding, wherever.

Learn the basics: Understanding manual flash will change your life.

Get creative: Move your flash off-camera, change angles, play with height, etc.

Real Talk: The Challenges

Of course, it wasn’t all easy. Laura shares the frustrations, the trial-and-error, and even how some clients feel intimidated by flash. What helps? Clear communication and remembering that light sets the mood. Used well, it’s the thing that takes your photos from good to great.

Gear We Love

We also got into some gear talk - like the trusty 24–70mm (hers Sony, mine Canon) and the balance between weight, versatility, and creative freedom. Laura’s advice: stop obsessing over what’s next and really learn to master what you already have.

Stepping Outside the Box

Another thing Laura is passionate about? Not getting stuck in one box. Fashion shoots, creative family sessions, or anything outside your norm can be the reset button your creativity needs.

Final Thoughts

I loved this conversation because it was such a reminder that photography is equal parts art and curiosity. Laura and I also talked about balancing life, family, and business - and how continuing to learn keeps things fresh no matter what season you’re in.

Thanks for tuning in - can’t wait to hear what you think about this one.

All the love,

Summer
