EP 89 - My Thoughts After Attending the Biggest Creative Conference in NYC
In this episode, I'm recapping my trip to New York City for the Build Conference - one of the biggest creative events of the year. I’m sharing what the experience was really like, the gear that caught my eye, and why conferences like this matter.
So what’s new?
Summer School has been growing in the best way. This little idea of mine has turned into such a special space. Since launching in March, it’s become a full-on membership with a community I’m so proud of. I’ve been working behind the scenes to bring in more incredible educators, and it’s been a really fun season of building and dreaming.
I also recently flew to New York City for the Build Conference, hosted by B&H - a huge event for photographers and content creators.
Was the conference worth it?
Absolutely. I think conferences are one of the most underrated ways to grow - not just your business, but your creativity too. This one had such a fun energy. Tons of people, tons of gear, and tons of chances to connect with other photographers.
It was honestly refreshing. The expo floor was spacious and filled with natural light, and it didn’t feel overly chaotic the way some events do. The whole thing was well-run, and I got to catch up with old friends, meet new ones, and nerd out over all the tech.
Any downsides?
The only tricky part? It was packed. Some of the rooms filled up super quickly, and I wasn’t able to get into every talk I wanted - especially some of the smaller stages where friends were speaking. But even with a few long lines, it was totally worth being in the room.
Should younger photographers be going to these?
Honestly yes. I think conferences are one of the best ways to break out of your bubble. Whether you're just starting or have been shooting for years, it’s rare to get that kind of in-person connection and inspiration. You don’t have to go to every talk or buy the fanciest gear, just showing up is important. You will walk away with something new.
New gear alert 🚨
Okay okay - let’s talk about the Godox Lux Master. I’ve been seeing this flash everywhere and finally got my hands on it. It’s this vintage-inspired flash modeled after 1940s gear (rumor has it it’s what inspired the Star Wars lightsaber design), and it’s SO fun. I’ll be using it at an upcoming workshop in Utah, and I already have some wild photo ideas for it. Can’t wait to show you.
That’s a wrap
Thanks for being here and following along. Whether it’s new gear, conferences, or just building a business that feels good - I hope something in this gave you a little spark.
And if you’ve been thinking about attending a conference or trying something new? Take this as your sign. Say yes to the things that help you grow.
Until next time,
Summer
