EP 86 - Building a Photography Business That Actually Lasts with Lindsay Coulter
Hey friends — I just wrapped up a convo with the incredible Lindsay Coulter, and I’m still thinking about everything we covered. She’s one of those people who just gets it — especially when it comes to building a photography business that’s both profitable and actually sustainable long-term (aka: not a fast track to burnout).
Here’s a little peek into what we talked about:
“What helped you transition out of that average-market hustle and into something more profitable and sustainable?”
Lindsay talked about something a lot of us need to hear — raising your prices is scary, but necessary. Once she started charging what her work was worth, she was able to say no to the grind and yes to fewer, higher-quality weddings. That shift didn’t just help her bank account — it gave her margin. Space to breathe, enjoy the process again, and focus on clients who aligned with her.
“Do you actually enjoy the business you’ve built?”
We flipped the script a bit and got into the why behind it all. Lindsay and I are both southern girls at heart, raised with a deep appreciation for balance and hard work — but not at the expense of our lives. We talked about how easy it is to fall into the trap of working constantly, and how important it is to build something that supports your life, not swallows it. You should enjoy your business.
“It’s funny — your focus used to be environmental sustainability, and now it’s business sustainability.”
I loved this part. Lindsay shared how the pandemic shifted her focus in such an honest way. That pause helped her reconnect with what she actually wanted her business to look like. She started leaning more into families and branding sessions — not just weddings — and it reignited her love for photography while also diversifying her income. That’s the kind of pivot I respect.
“What’s something that helps other photographers build a more sustainable business?”
Lindsay didn’t hold back: Know your values. Set up smart systems. And please stop doing it all yourself. She’s big on outsourcing, especially editing — and she’s found that using AI tools has saved her so much time and energy. Systems and support = sustainability. Period.
Wrapping it Up
I loved this chat with Lindsay so much. She’s such a thoughtful voice in the industry, and her approach is a perfect mix of heart and strategy. If you’re in that spot where you’re craving something more sustainable (without giving up your creativity or income), this one’s for you.
Thanks for tuning in — and huge thanks to Lindsay for being such a generous guest. Go listen and let us know your favorite takeaway!
