EP 127 - How to Pose Couples as a Wedding Photographer with Summer Grace

In this episode, I’m sharing my approach to posing as a photographer - and why posing isn’t actually the most important part of a photo.

I break down how I start with light and environment, and how I guide couples in a way that feels natural, not forced.

If your photos have been feeling stiff, this will help you rethink posing entirely.

A Journey Around the World

Over the past three weeks, my schedule was packed with teaching and photo sessions spanning multiple continents. From dazzling weddings in Palm Springs to insightful workshops in Scotland and England, and an exhilarating conference at Glazer's in Seattle, it's been a whirlwind of creativity and connection. And now, tucked back home, I’m excited to share a glimpse of what I’ve been gathering from these enriching experiences.

The Essence of Posing

“There's no perfect pose...it's a tiny piece of a huge puzzle,” I shared in the podcast, challenging the notion that any single pose can define a photo. Instead, it’s about the entire environment - lighting, styling, the location - crafting a narrative around each image. This is what elevates a simple photograph into a compelling story.

Lighting as the Artist’s Brush

“Lighting is so important,” I emphasized, discussing how the time of day and direction of natural and artificial light can transform the atmosphere and dynamics of a shoot. Whether it's the golden hues of sunset or the stark lines of a cityscape, lighting not only guides posing but also echoes the mood and personality of a photo session.

Building on Environment and Emotion

The environment and the emotional connection with your subjects play pivotal roles in posing too. Imagine a cozy bar setting versus a rugged cliffside - each offers a distinctive canvas for creativity. “Your environment can play in opposing so much,” I noted. Understanding these elements allows photographers to seize moments that are not only visually striking but authentic and personal.

The Process: Designing, Refining, Releasing

One of the strategies I shared is the "Design, Refine, Release" method. Here’s how it works:

1. Design: Initiate a pose or set the scene. This gives both the photographer and subjects a foundation to build upon.

‍ ‍

2. Refine: Adjust and align the elements, ensuring the pose is flattering and fits the environment.

3. Release: Let the moment unfold, capturing candid reactions and natural interactions. As I put it, “the release is when you can get some of the coolest images.”

Collaboration and Honest Creativity

In this collaborative dance, honesty is key. By engaging couples in the creative process and valuating their comfort, you foster genuine interactions and organic moments. As I reflected, “The best shoots… come from a state of honest collaboration.”

Personal Growth and Experimentation

Photography is as much about personal growth as it is about capturing others. I encourage every photographer to put themselves in their clients’ shoes (or lenses, in this case) by stepping in front of the camera. “I’ve never learned more about posing than forcing myself to get behind the camera,” I confessed. It’s a crucial step towards understanding client experiences and refining your craft.

Final Thoughts

Remember, posing isn’t about forcing images into a mold, but shaping environments where stories can naturally unfold. The creativity and spontaneity that emerge from this approach are what make our work truly memorable.

I hope you find these insights helpful and energize your next shoot with fresh perspectives. Whether you're a seasoned professional or an aspiring photographer, the world of posing is vast and full of opportunity.
