EP 150 - Does Photography Gear Actually Matter?

Does gear actually matter, or is it all about the photographer behind the camera? In this week's episode of Summer School, I'm sharing my slightly controversial take: gear absolutely matters, just not necessarily in the way people think it does.

I'm recording this one from my dining room in my pajamas after a power outage at my usual recording spot, so we're improvising a little today.

The Gear Debate

I think photographers love to say that gear doesn't matter, and while I understand the sentiment, I don't completely agree. You can absolutely create incredible work with an entry-level camera, but I also think certain cameras produce results that you genuinely can't replicate with anything else.

Take my Holga, for example. It's a cheap plastic film camera, but the imperfections, softness, and unpredictability are exactly what make me love it. And no, I don't think you can perfectly recreate that look with a preset.

How Gear Has Changed My Photography

I started out shooting on a Canon 6D and a prime lens, and over the years, my equipment has evolved alongside my style. These days, I'm shooting everything from my Canon R5 to Contax cameras, Holgas, and weird little fisheyes.

I'm also talking about something I don't hear discussed enough: gear as a marketing tool. I've literally had clients tell me they wanted to book me because of specific images I created with niche cameras. Sometimes the equipment you use really does help set your work apart.

Do You Actually Need Expensive Gear?

Absolutely not. Some of my favorite images have come from my cheapest cameras.

Buying expensive equipment won't automatically make you a better photographer, and I think it's important to ask yourself what you're actually hoping to achieve before investing in something new.

But I also think experimenting with different cameras, lenses, and techniques can be one of the best ways to grow creatively. Sometimes trying something completely different is exactly what you need to get out of a creative rut.

My takeaway? You don't need the best gear. You need the right gear for the kind of work you want to create.
