EP 93 - Photography Hot Takes from Threads
Hi! It's another solo episode, and this time I'll be diving into some hot takes straight from Threads. I’m sharing my honest reactions, what I agree with, and where I think we’re getting it wrong (or right).
Hot Takes
Let’s dive into some hot takes and opinions from threads — because wow, people have opinions. Whether it’s vendors being too honest, or photographers wading into spicy debates over on Reddit, this space is never boring. I’ll share what’s resonated, what I agree with, and what I think we need to rethink.
When a Couple Wants a Private Wedding
One big conversation? A couple asked for their wedding to stay completely private, and the photographer turned them down. I get both sides. For some of us, sharing our work is how we book the next client - and for others, taking on private gigs can be a breath of fresh air. There’s no wrong answer. You’re allowed to choose based on your values and business needs.
Free Work: Bad Idea or Smart Strategy?
Let’s talk about free work. Is it always bad? Not necessarily. I think it depends on why you’re doing it. If it’s strategic and aligned with where you want to go - cool. If it’s draining and done out of pressure or fear - probably not worth it. The key is being intentional. A few free shoots early on opened doors I never expected.
On Pricing + Working with Budget-Conscious Clients
There’s something to be said for how we approach pricing, too. Sometimes, it's less about dropping your rates and more about building a custom offer that still feels good on both sides. I recently heard a story about a brand doing an incredible job pre-shoot calming a nervous client - that kind of care and professionalism matters just as much as what’s on the invoice.
Let’s Talk Tech + Client Communication
Also… tech fails. It happens. HoneyBook recently glitched on me and a few friends, and while that’s annoying, it reminded me that no system is perfect. What does matter is how we show up and communicate when things go sideways. Clients remember how you handle the hiccups more than anything else.
Wrapping It Up
This industry is full of nuance, and no one’s doing it perfectly, but that’s kind of the point. You get to build something that fits you. Stay grounded in what feels right, lead with honesty, and keep adapting. That’s how we create businesses that last.
